Positive and Negative Learning Experiences

Primary school was a positive learning experience for me. I attended a small village primary, where we were encouraged to learn in creative ways - I remember learning to play chess, creating song & dance routiness in the library at luchtime (X factor eat your heart out) joining a book club - and discovering that I could draw, which came as something of a surprise to me. I won a design competition for Charles & Di's wedding - and still have the prize, a commemorative plate.
Secondary school was a negative learning experience. It was a very academic school, which didn't suit me, I was bored by the lessons which were very unexciting in their approach & I didn't see the point. If I put my hand up & got the answer wrong, everyone would laugh at you - as a naturally shy child I just retreated into my shell, and coasted through school until I could leave at 16. It wasn't until i sarted on my BTEC that I was encouraged to speak up & become part of a group, they valued my opinion & didn't laugh when I got an answer wrong - and also taught me that there are no wrong answers, something I remind the kids of frequently today. I have tried to follow this approach in all my workshops.
