Good learning experience
I have a natural curiosity of how things work and are connected and have always enjoyed school/learning and classroom learning. I enjoy the rigour of an academic setting.
I particularly remember two secondary school history teachers who were so passionate about their subject and explaining the past to people. One though very academic was probably not best suited to a classroom environment but her passion and creativity within the subject matter was inspiring (I even wrote a play about which the whole class did about t
he claims to the English throne in 1066). The other was enthusiastic and very bright, but also had the ability to be very silly (and we had one lesson where we all wore our text books on our head) and I think a sense of fun is tremendously important. I think passion for what you are doing is infectious and engages others in the learning process.
Bad learning experience
Last year I was on a cultural leadership course and one of the sessions called ‘Leader as a wise fool’ and was meant to be an exploration of how by questioning and asking the reacting like a child and playing with ideas new forms developed. However, the session was poorly structured and a ‘visioning exercise’ (which started with chimes) descended into mild hysteria, as the session had too many aims, unclear methods and no direction.
